Big Brands Celebrating
Hispanic Heritage Month is here! What first begun as a weeklong celebration in 1968 was extended to a full month in 1988 to celebrate the contributions of Hispanics/Latinos to the U.S. Held from September 15 to October 15, big brands are seeing the importance of recognizing this important month and have been working on some fun projects to help celebrate.
People en Español
A lot of big companies such as Coca-Cola, CoverGirl and Disney, among others, celebrated the Heritage Month this year with a series of family over Labor Day weekend in San Antonio, Texas. People en Español, a popular Hispanic magazine, hosted the 3rd annual event and featured some big-name brands. Coca-Cola started “Coke Moments,” where Hispanic families had a chance to share their traditions, take pictures and enjoy musical performances. CoverGirl gave away free samples and mini-makeovers, and Disney provided families the opportunity to sing, dance and take photos with Disney characters.
Some universities in Kansas also plan to celebrate the great Hispanic contributions to this nation! Wichita State University will teach the history behind this event and hold Zumba and Salsa dances, while the University of Kansas will be celebrating with cultural festivals and “meriendas,” which are afternoon snacks. They are also encouraging students to watch the Mexico vs. Brazil soccer (or fútbol) match at Mexican restaurant Cielito Lindo in Lawrence, KS, on October 11.
The YMCA of Greater Kansas City
Our client, the YMCA of Greater Kansas City, hosted a successful “open house” with a Zumbathon and free access to the Y facilities at the Olathe location on Saturday, September 13. The YMCA also invites anyone across the metro area to join them for poetry reading with the Latino Writers Collective on Saturday, October 4, from 1-2 PM at the Olathe Public Library.
Additionally, the YMCA has teamed up with Ball’s Price Chopper (known for its fresh produce!) in an effort to promote healthy living habits with its Salsa, Sabor y Salud class held in Spanish at Y locations across the city. Ball’s will host an event at its Roeland Park location on Saturday, September 20, and will provide fresh snacks and fun activities for the kids. All are welcome to attend these events!
